Before the shaking starts, there are some steps you can take that will help make your home safer in the event of an earthquake. When you feel the ground begin to shake time is crucial. There is no time to panic. Choose to act and live.

STRUCTURAL STABALIZERS
Buildings built prior to 1940 are not always able withstand earthquake forces without damage. It is common to find that these were built without being fastened to the foundation. Consider having the structure inspected. For homes with gas utilities, an automatic shutoff valve can be installed. Hot water heaters can be anchored securely with straps near the bottom and top of the tank. Straps can be installed to tie a chimney to the roof.

LARGE FURNISHINGS
Large furniture can be anchored in place by bolting it to studs in the wall. Free standing bookcases and cabinets are examples of these items. Most hardware stores will carry the materials you will need for this project. This safety measure is good for homes where small children reside. In the event that a large furniture piece is climbed, these straps can keep them from falling onto and crushing a little one. Furniture retailers often include these straps with the purchase of large items.

CABINETS & DRAWERS
Plastic safety latches help keep drawers and cabinet doors from falling open during shaking. Electronics and computer equipment can be secured with straps.

SHELVES
It is best to position bookshelves away from beds in order to avoid injuries to sleeping persons that would result from falling objects. Museum jell can be used to affix items securely to shelves and prevent breakage. Museums use this same product to protect fragile items from accidents. Adding a lip to the edge of shelving can keep books and other items from sliding off and causing injury during smaller tremors.
